The Impact of the CSI w/o DB Facebook Page on Visits and Engagement

On Dec. 28 2012 I launched a Facebook page to promote this blog.  I looked at Google Analytics (GA) over the last year to see what impact, if any, it has had on visits to my site.  I copied the numbers and charts from GA for the period 12/28/2012 to 12/28/2013 (blue line in graphs below) vs. 12/28/2011 to 12/27/2012 (red line in graphs below).  It may seem that the second period is a day shorter than the first but the second has leap year in 2012.

The first chart says that the total number of visitors and the number of unique visitors decreased 11.41% and 21.23 % respectively in the last year.  The number of visitors is not the only measure engagement however.  The total number of pageviews did increase by 36.89% with a 54.51% increase in the number of blog pages viewed per visit.  The biggest differences are seen in the months January thru April for visits and pageviews.

While the % of new visits has decreased by 12.39%, the % of returning visitors has increased from 19.6% to 29.6% which is a 33.6% increase.  Likewise the average visit duration increased 45.64% but the average pageview time (not shown) decreased from 39 seconds to 32.  This decrease is understandable when there are more pageviews per visit.  

It seems that the overall visitors has decreased over the last year but the level of engagement has increased over the same period.  There can be other reasons for this increased engagement.  The blog is syndicated in a variety of ways.  The table below of the referrals to the page shows that visitors from Facebook (mobile and desktop) and networkedblogs (a Facebook application for new posts) have increased by 40% with similar increases in the pages/visit and the time per visit.  This doesn't quite compensate for decreases in visits from Stumbleupon, google.com, and the BBC but the level of engagement is better from those sites.  Facebook has limited circulation of posts from pages in recent months unless ads are purchased.  Mark Zuckerberg needs to keep his profit margins up but those who see the posts seem engaged.
